Studies carried out by the Superintendency Laboratory of Applied Research in the Regio I and II had revealed evidence of vineyards in green areas in different parts of the ancient city and in the quarters around the Amphitheatre archaeological data proved the definite presence of these plants.
In 1996 it became clear that this land could once again be cultivated. The interlocutor chosen for this project was the Mastroberardino  winery, a company founded at the end of the 18th century, registered with the MIUR (the Italian Ministry for Education, Universities and Research) and recognised by the international scientific community for its research into identification and recovery of ancient vines, with special focus on those in Campania.
At the end of long experimentations, the decision was made to use three vines considered to be autochthonous: aglianico, sciacinoso and piedirosso, whose ancestors were identified respectively as Vitis hellenica, Vitis oleogina and Columbina purpurea.
In the Garden of the Fugitives, one of the most visited places in Pompeii, the vineyard has been included in the visitors’ tour.
